A change in the season calls for some changes in our daily routines and habits as well. While it might take a while for our bodies to warm up to the new season, there are surely catalysts that will help with the process while keeping us healthy and well.
A very common mistake is to not use sunscreen during the winter. Well, it is a habit to get rid of because the sun does not disappear, and our skin is still very much exposed to the harmful UV rays. Keep up the regular sunscreen routine regardless of the temperature drop.
We tend to lather up heavily during baths, and it might work in the summer, but in the winter, it will dry your skin out like nothing else. Most soaps are alkaline, meaning they rip your skin of hydration. Opt for body washes or non-alkaline soaps. If neither is possible, slather yourself in some heavy moisturiser right after.
OIL YOUR HAIR FREQUENTLY
Dry hair and a dry scalp are unavoidable winter woes. So whenever you get the time, do a coconut oil mask and try to leave it on for some time, or at the very least, overnight, to bring some moisture and hydration back into the scalp area.WASH YOUR HANDS
This might come as a surprise since this is something we always do, but in the winter, with viruses and germs going all around, it becomes all the more important to do so. This can prevent your common colds and flus from spreading.
Throw away toothbrushes after recovering from flu or a cold. Toothbrushes, being in a moist bathroom environment, are a great breeding ground for bacteria and viruses, so using one that might have your flu viruses left-over can lead to an infection again.
SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER
Also known as the winter blues, winter often gets us depressed and down, and feeling lethargic. The lack of sunshine and cooler environment tends to have this effect. Increase your exposure to the sun. Not only is this a good source of vitamin D, but will also shoo away the winter blues, leaving you feeling energised.
TREAT YOUR SKIN
It is no lie that winter practically destroys our skin. Stock up on moisturisers, especially oil based if you have extremely dry skin. Never go a day without it, and slather yourself in it after a shower and before bed. If your regular moisturiser is not cutting it for you, mix in a few drops of olive oil or coconut oil, it will create a huge difference.
Increasing fibre intake can help strengthen your immune system, something you heavily require with flus going all around. Add oats, nuts, fruits or fibrous vegetables to your current diet, or any other form of fibre you enjoy taking, and it will be more than just bowel protection.
Carry a small pack of sanitising wipes or hand sanitisers in these months. With germs all around that could cling onto you, you should not take the risk. Before meals or after a trip to the toilet, sanitise your hands so you do not risk eating the flu germs. It is also a great save for when someone else sneezes on you.
