The shootout took place in Chithalia near Paharpur Bridge around 5am on Tuesday, said Rafiqul Islam, chief of Mirpur Police Station. The dead have been identified as Nayem Islam, 23, and Joyar Ali, 25. Deb Datta, a third grader in Chithalia Primary School, was abducted on Jun 8 by two miscreants on a motorbike while he was heading to a private coaching centre.
That evening, the kidnappers called his father Pabitra Datta over phone and demanded Tk 5 million as ransom. The family filed a police case a day later.
OC Rafiqul said the police found Deb’s body in a sack dumped into a septic tank at Nayem’s house around 2:30pm on Monday.
Police arrested Nayem and Joyar on that day.
The police later conducted a drive in the neighbourhood along with the two to arrest other criminals, he said.
‘Sensing the presence of police, the abductors opened fire on them and the law enforcers retaliated, triggering a gunfight.”
Nayem and Joyar were fatally wounded when they tried to flee the scene during the gunfight. They were rushed to Mirpur Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared them dead.
Four policemen—Lal Chand, Emdadul Haque, Ruhul Amin and Saiful Islam—were injured in the gunfight.
Two pistols and few sharp weapons were recovered from the scene, OC Rafiqul said.
