Legendary Indian filmmaker Mrinal Sen passed away on Sunday. He was 95.
Mrinal, who had been suffering from age-related ailments for a while, died at his home in Bhawanipore, of Kolkata around 10:30am, reports Anandbazaar Patrika,
Born on May 14, 1923, in Faridpur (now in Bangladesh), the Padma Bhushan awardee made his first feature film in 1953.
His next film, Neel Akasher Niche, earned him local recognition, but it was his third film Baishe Shraban that gave Mrinal international exposure.
In 2001, he was awarded the Commandeur de l ordre des Arts et letters by the French government. Among the many recognitions and accolades, he also received the Dadasaheb Phalke award by the government of India in 2005.
