An Awami League supporter was beaten dead allegedly by BNP men while campaigning in Sylhet Sadar upazila on Thursday night.
Quoting police Sylhet correspondent reported that the deceased was identified as Koysor Mia, 35.
Sylhet city unit AL president Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran claimed that some BNP men attacked Koysor following an altercation while he was distributing leaflets in support of AL candidate for the Sylhet-1 in Nolkot village around 10:00pm, leaving him critically injured.
Later, Koysor was rushed to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead, he said.
Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station, told that they had heard that a local AL man died in an attack. "We are investigating the matter," he added.
However, BNP local leaders denied the allegation.
Ali Ahmed, general secretary of Sylhet district unit BNP, said it was a conspiracy. the murder took place due to the internal feud in AL camp and now it is being used as a weapon against BNP.
"When the BNP men cannot even conduct their own campaign with safety, how could they attack the AL man," he questioned.
