The government has posted Harunor Rashid as superintendent of police in Narayanganj, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said, expressing worries over the move ahead of the election. The Narayanganj SP, whose wife is an MP, has been replaced by Mr Harun. The situation is like out of the frying pan into the fire,” the BNP secretary general told a news conference in Dhaka on Friday. He repeated the allegation that the Election Commission was working on orders from the government.
Police arrested three possible BNP candidates on false charges in past two days, he claimed.
“Weve sent many letters to the commission but no response or action followed,” he said.
The government withdrew SP Anisur Rahman from Narayanganj following EC orders last Wednesday.
The EC move followed a complaint filed by the BNP-led 20-Party Alliance which claimed it would not be possible for Anisur to work without bias during the parliamentary polls as his wife Fatema Tuzzahura is an Awami League MP from a seat reserved for women.
Now Mirza Fakhrul says SP Harun has been posted in Narayanganj even though no government orders have been made.
The BNP had lodged a complaint against Harun when he had been working in Gazipur during union council elections in 2016. The government had withdrawn him only to reinstate him later on.
SP Harun had also made headlines a few years ago for beating up BNPs former chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque during a demonstration in front of the parliament building.
