Three-day Independence Festival marking the 49th Independence Day began amid festivity simultaneously at Central Shaheed Minar and Rabindra Sarobar on Sunday. Organised by Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, the festival is featuring vibrant cultural shows and discussion sessions.
Renowned cultural organisations and theatre troupes are performing at the festival.
Thespian Nasiruddin Yousuff inaugurated the festival, while Sammilita Sangskritik Jote president Ghulam Quddus presided over the inauguration ceremony.
Dhaka University pro vice-chancellor professor Muhammad Samad, film and TV actor Shahidul Alam Sacchu, SSJ general secretary Hasan Arif and others spoke at the inauguration ceremony.
’Our Central Shaheed Minar was vandalised by the Pakistani occupation forces during the liberation War. After independence, we made a new Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to martyrs. We believe in creating and building, not in destroying things. I hope and believe that the country will go forward with the spirit of liberation war,’ said Nasiruddin Yousuff.
’We had to pay a heavy price to earn the independence so that we can establish the rights of all, irrespective of religions and ethnicities in Bangladesh,’ said Ghulam Quddus.
The festival began with a one-minute silence commemorating martyred freedom fighters.
Spandan artistes commenced the cultural show presenting a colourful dance recital synchronised with patriotic song Aaj rukhbe tader kara to the delight of the audience at Central Shaheed Minar.
Artistes of Shur Shagor and Wrishiz Shilpi Goshthi rendered chorus songs at the event, while Fakir Miraz, Arif Rahman and Nabanita Jahid Chowdhury Ananya performed solo.
Renowned recitation artistes Rupa Chakrabarty and Dr Shahadat Hossain Nipu recited liberation war poems, penned by renowned poets.
Besides, Arayanak Natya Dal staged a street play and Kathak Nirtya Samparaday artistes presented a group dance recital.
Bulbul Mohalanabish, Sanzida Manzurul Happy, Salma Chowdhury, Proloy Saha, Shimul Saha and others rendered songs, while recitation artistes Mir Barkat, Tammana Sarwar Nipa recited poems at Rabindra Sarobor in Dhanmondi.
The festival will end today.
