Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution in a report submitted to the High Court Division on Tuesday said that they have barred production and marketing of bottled and jarred water by 10 companies.The institution said licences of seven of the companies have been suspended and licences of the remaining three companies have been cancelled.
Licences of AST Beverage Limited who produce bottled water Alma, Fruits and Flavours Limited who produced bottled water Yummy Yummy, Safe International who produce jarred water Cany, Sinha Bangladesh Trade Ltd who produce bottled water Aqua Mineral, Crystal Food and Beverage who produce jarred water CFB , Urotech Trade and Technology who produce jarred water Osma, Unity Agro Beverage who produced jarred water Apic have been suspended, the BSTI told the court.
Licences of Best Drinking Water who produce jarred water Best One, Ananda Food and Beverage who produce jarred water Aananda Plus and Real Food and Beverage who produce jarred water Real First have been cancelled.
The BSTI submitted the list in response to the court’s directive to inform it by February 24 what action was taken against the five companies for marketing unsafe drinking water.
The bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil after hearing a public interest litigation writ petition of Supreme Court lawyer Shammi Akther directed BSTI to test of bottled water sold across the country and submit the findings.
On Tuesday, the bench also instructed Bangladesh Food Safety Authority to submit a report on what actions they have taken for food adulteration and what is their jurisdiction by March 3.
