Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda today asked the election officials to take lessons from the polls-time mistakes and be prepared for the upcoming upazila elections. The CEC asked the concerned officials to identify the mistakes of using the electronic voting machines (EVM) in the 2018 Jatiya Sangsad elections and correct those ahead of the upazila elections.
There were problems in some of the places where EVM were used in the general election, the CEC said while addressing a training programme in Dhaka this morning.
Since EVM is a new system for voting, people will get confused if any error occurs, the CEC said.
The CEC advised the election officials to participate in the training attentively.
The training programme was organised for the trainers of election officials and on voting through EVMs at the Electoral Training Institute (ETI) in the capital’s Agargaon.
The first phase of the upazila polls is set to be held on either March 8 or 9. The commission will sit in a meeting on February 3 to finalise the election date.
The last phase of the five-phase polls would be held after the Ramadan, which is likely to begin on May 5.
EC sources said they were planning to hold the second phase of the election on March 18, the third phase on March 24 and the fourth phase on March 31.
The fifth upazila polls will be held in 480 out of the 492 upazilas, said EC officials, adding that over Tk 500 crore would be required to hold the polls.
The fourth upazila election was held in 2014. A total of 487 upazilas went to polls in six phases at that time.
