Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said the Sheikh Hasina government is acting in a humane way regarding the treatment of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. Khaleda has been in jail since February 8 last year in connection with a corruption case.
In response to a query over Khaleda’s treatment, Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said: “As far as I know, the Sheikh Hasina administration is not so cruel that Khaleda Zia will have to go without treatment.” He was addressing a press conference after holding a meeting with AL departmental secretaries at party president Sheikh Hasina’s political office in the city. AL joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Abdur Rahman, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque, SM Rezaul Karim, Abdus Sattar, Eng. Md. Abdus Sabur, Sujit Roy Nondi, Shamsunnahar Chapa, Faridunnahar Laily, Delwar Hossain, Barrister Biplob Borua and Marufa Akhter Popi, among others, were present.
Earlier, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had accused the government of not providing proper treatment to their party chief Khaleda Zia, who is now undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). The BNP has long been demanding that Khaleda ne shifted to a specialised hospital for better treatment.
Referring to the new government elected in India, the AL general secretary said he was optimistic about resolving the unresolved issues between Bangladesh and India during the upcoming tenure of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi.
“During Modi’s last tenure, we were able to resolve many issues between the two countries. We hope that he would continue to work towards resolving the unsettled matters, including the Teesta water-sharing issue,” he added.
He said Modi contributed to the settlement of longstanding border disputes. His government had resolved the Sitmahol (corridor) problem. In the upcoming tenure, Modi would be interested in resolving the other problems existing between the two countries, he added.
Quader said the AL secretariat meeting was held to discuss the arrangement of a national conference in October and organisational tours of the party. Besides, the meeting discussed national and organizational activities, `Mujib Borsho’ and other issues.
