The government will buy 600,000 tonnes of boiled Aman rice at Tk 36 per kg this year. Food Minister Qamrul Islam provided the information to media after a meeting with the ministry’s planning and monitoring unit on Sunday.
“We had a discussion over the condition and extent of our food reserves. For now, we have decided to buy 600,000 tonnes of parboiled Aman rice at Tk 36 per kg from Dec 1 to Feb 28,” Islam said.
In addition to that, another two or three lakh tonnes of Aman rice may be bought after the initial collection,” he said.The government usually buys rice paddy from farmers while rice is bought from the mills.
The production cost of per kg Aman rice is Tk 34 this year. The government has fixed its price at Tk 36 on the basis of research on the current market.
“Farmers will benefit as they will not have any problem providing rice at that price,” the minister said.
The current market price of Aman, the second largest rice crop of Bangladesh after Boro, is Tk 33-35 per kg.
