Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday decided not to participate in the Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral by-poll and the Upazila Parishad elections. A meeting of the party’s standing committee at its jailed chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in the evening decided to boycott the upcoming local government polls.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed the party decision at a news briefing after the meeting.
The Dhaka North City Corporation and Upazila Parishad polls are scheduled for February 28 and in March respectively.
Fakhrul said the party believed that the polls under the present government and Election Commission would be nothing but ’farce’.
He said the Election Commission has already become a failure, which has been proved during the December 30 parliament polls.
Fakhrul claimed that any election would not be free and fair without under a neutral government.
