At the meeting, the MPs-elect told the party secretary general that they are under pressure from the people of their respective constituencies and that the electorate wants them to join the House. In response, Fakhrul, who has been elected from Bogura-6 constituency, advised them to wait for the party decision, said party insiders.

Earlier, two leaders of Ganaforum, a component of the Jatiya Oikyafront, of which BNP is a major component, joined parliament ignoring respective party and alliance decision. When contacted, Harunur Rashid from Chapainawabganj-3 constituency said he would join the parliament if the party chief agrees.

He, however, said that the MPs-elect would comply with party decision on joining the parliament. A senior BNP leader, on condition of anonymity, said if the chairperson gets release on bail, she might come up with a positive decision for the MPs-elect on joining the parliament.

The four other MPs-elect of BNP are: Mosharraf Hossain (Bogura-7), Aminul Islam (Chapainawabganj-2), Zahidur Rahman (Thakurgaon-3) and Ukil Abdus Sattar (Brahmanbaria-2).

According to the constitution, a lawmaker has to take oath within 90 days after the parliamentary election. Accordingly, if the lawmakers elected from the BNP in the December 30 national election do not take oath by April 30, their seats would fall vacant.

The BNP and its allies in the 20-party alliance and Oikyafront took part in the December 30 polls. The BNP and Ganaforum got only six seats from among the 300 constituencies.
