Alliance Française de Dhaka is organising an evening of music by eminent singer Haimanti Sukla and Manzurul Islam Khan today at its La Galerie. The concert will be held at 6:30pm followed by the launching ceremony of a new CD of Manzurul Islam Khan named ‘Joshnar Beshamal’.
Kunal Ray writes in The Hindu, "[...] there was instant jubilation across West Bengal and beyond when Haimanti Sukla, one of modern Bengali music"s most accomplished virtuous was named a recipient in the sargam sangeet" category. [...] there is no doubt that Haimanti Sukla is a rare music an in Bengal today, a gharana unto herself. Equally adept at classical and all forms of semi-classical music, Haimanti can sing a full concert comprising khayal, thumri, ghazal,dadra, chaiti and Bengali film and non-film songs timeless for their lyricism, composition al value and unmatched rendition. Trained by her father, Pandit Harihar Sukla and another stalwart musician, Pandit Chinmay Lahiri, she has sung for legendary music composers such as Hemanta Mukherjee, Manna Dey, Salil Chowdhury, Naushad to name a few."
Kamal Lohani said that Manzurul Islam Khan, the featured artiste of the evening, had tried his best to keep alive the tradition of ghazals in the country. [...] He learnt under Ustad Abul Kalam Siddiqui, Ustad Shankar Das, and under Ustad Nurul Islam. He also studied at Chhayanaut. He was inspired by classical nuances of Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Al, and also Kazi Nazrul slam. He is an "A" grade artist of BTV and Bangladesh Betar."
To note, the entry to the event is free, while seats are limited and available on first-come, first-served basis.
