Two Rohingya youths, suspects in the murder of Juba League leader Omar Faruk, were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila while another suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Maricha border area of Zakiganj upazila early yesterday.

In Cox’s Bazar the deceased were identified as Md Shah and Abdur Shukkur of Jadimura Rohingya Camp in Teknaf.

Tipped off that Rohingya criminals were gathering beside Jadimura Hill, police conducted a drive there around 1:30 am, said Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station.

Sensing the presence of police, the youths opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defence that triggered the gunfight, the OC said.

After the gunfight, he said, police rescued the two injured from the spot and were admitted to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex from where they were shifted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Pradip Kumar said police recovered two guns, nine rounds of bullet from the spot.

On Thursday night, Juba League leader Omar Faruk, 30, was shot dead at Jadimura in Teknafupazila allegedly by a group of Rohingya criminals.

On Friday afternoon, hundreds of agitated locals stormed a Rohingya camp and vandalised makeshift houses and NGO offices following the murder of the local Juba League leader.

They burned tyres and plastic boxes to block a five-kilometre road from Teknaf municipality to Leda Point for three hours. The residence of Rohingya leader Noor Mohammad was also torched. OC Pradip Kumar said they persuaded the agitated locals to end their blockade around 3pm assuring them of arresting the killers and bringing them to justice.

’Robber’ killed in Sylhet ’gunfight’

In Sylhet, a suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Maricha

border area of Zakiganj upazila.

The deceased was identified as Abdus Shaheed Chhalu, 32, of Dharmadihi village under Baralekha upazila in Moulvibazar.

Mir MdAbdun Naser, officer-in-charge of Zakiganj Police Station, said tipped off that a gang of eight to nine robbers was preparing for committing robbery in the area, a team of police conducted a drive early yesterday.

Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defense, triggering the gunfight.

After the gunfight, police recovered the body of Chhalu from the spot.

There are six robbery and arms cases against Chhalu with Kanaighat, Bianibazar, Golapganj, Balaganj and Moglabazar police stations, the OC added.
