"We’ve a plan to generate more electricity as we’re now producing 22,000MW…we’ll be able to introduce electric trains in near future…we’ll set up rail lines for remote areas as well to introduce speedy trains for easier communications," she said.

A Khulna tribunal on Tuesday convicted five people and sentenced them to death for killing a female private bank official after gang-rape and her father in 2015. The convicts are Saiful Islam Pitil, 30, Shariful, 27, Mohamamd Liton, 28, Abu Syed, 25, and Azizur Rahman Palash, 26, of Labanchhara in the city. Of them, Shariful was tried in absentia.

A recent spurt in the prices of cattle feed and other essentials has forced farmers to refrain from fattening their cows. They fear that if Indian cattle enter Bangladesh after crossing the border illegally, the cattle farmers here would have to face huge losses. According to sources in the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), a total of 11,788,563 heads of cattle (cows) against a demand of 1.12 crore are being prepared for this year’s Eid-ul-Azha under the cow-fattening programme in 577,416 commercial farms across the country.

The flood situation in five districts—Kurigram, Jamalpur, Gaibandha, Bogura, and Sirajganj—is likely to deteriorate in the next 24 hours as major rivers passing through those districts keep rising alarmingly. Fourteen rivers were flowing above their respective danger levels at 26 points yesterday, according to sources in the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC). These rivers are: the Surma, Kushiara, Manu, Dhalai, Khowai, Someshwari, Kangsa, Dharla, Teesta, Ghagot, Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Sangu and the Matamuhuri.

Egypt is opening two of its earliest pyramids, located about 40 kilometres south of the capital Cairo, to visitors for the first time since 1965. Antiquities Minister Khaled el-Anany also told reporters on Saturday that Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered a collection of stone, clay and wooden sarcophagi, some of them with mummies, in the Dahshur royal necropolis. He says archaeologists also found wooden funerary masks along with instruments used in cutting stones, dating to the Late Period (664-332 B.C.).
