Police have arrested BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Mia hours after a court sentenced him to three years in jail for hiding wealth information. The member of the party’s policymaking body National Standing Committee was arrested from his home at Eskaton in Dhaka on Tuesday evening, police said.

Photographer-activist Shahidul Alam has been released from jail over three months after his arrest on charges of spreading rumours during student protests for road safety. His release on Tuesday night was delayed by hours due to dissimilarity in his home addresses mentioned in the order and the prison papers, the authorities said. His family members, friends and well-wishers waited at the gates of Dhaka Central Jail at Keraniganj for hours from the morning, but the authorities initially said he was not getting released on the day.

National Board of Revenue (NBR) has fetched Tk 2468,94,40,895 from the weeklong Income Tax Fair across the country, which is 11.35 per cent higher than the previous year. The revenue authority collected Tk 2217,33,14,221 from the last year's fair, according to NBR officials. They said though the fair concluded, the services offered at the fair will be available in all the tax offices from 22-30 November for the convenience of the taxpayers.

The High Court has released the full judgment on the conviction of Nazmul Huda, jeopardising his hopes of running for office in the parliamentary elections. The bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam reduced the sentence of Huda from seven to four years in jail on Nov 8 last year. The court also ordered him to surrender in the trial court for serving the remainder of his jail term within 45 days from the date the trial court gets a copy of the full verdict.
