For decades, health experts have struggled to determine whether cell phones can cause cancer. On Thursday, a federal agency released the final results of what experts call the world’s largest and most costly experiment to look into the question. The study originated in the Clinton administration, cost $30 million and involved some 3,000 rodents. The experiment, by the National Toxicology Programme, found positive but relatively modest evidence that radio waves from some types of cell phones could raise the risk that male rats develop brain cancer.

A Pakistani Muslim spiritual leader known as the “father of the Taliban” was killed Friday evening by a knife-wielding assailant who sneaked into his bedroom, officials said, further roiling the country’s combustible religious tensions. The leader, Maulana Sami ul-Haq, 81, exerted an overarching influence over the Taliban movement in neighbouring Afghanistan and within Pakistan and led his own faction of a religious party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called in the UNHCR chief in Bangladesh to discuss the upcoming Rohingya repatriation after the UN’s comment in New York. “It’s not a summons. Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and three others have been sentenced to seven years in prison each for embezzling Tk 31.54 million from the Zia Charitable Trust. Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman announced the verdict on Monday from the temporary premises of the court at the old central prison at Dhaka’s Nazimuddin Road. Judge Akhtaruzzaman took nearly 45 minutes to read a summary of a 600-page verdict. He found the former prime minister guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1947 and sentenced her to seven years in prison and fined her Tk 1 million.
