US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat on Tuesday said Bangladesh has come so far in the 47 years since liberation and has so much potential to achieve even more. ‘Continued economic development and growth depends on Bangladesh remaining vigilant and continuing to address issues like factory safety and labor rights,’ she said. Bangladesh has taken a coordinated approach to prevent and control cervical cancer which is the second most common cancer in the country. Approximately 12,000 new cases are detected every year, and over 6,000 die due to the severity of the disease, according to the UN population agency, UNFPA. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, UNFPA, and WHO organised a dissemination workshop for the newly endorsed National Strategy for Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control in Bangladesh on Monday.

Garment workers demanding backpay at a Gazipur factory have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for over four hours. Police and protesters have clashed during the demonstration. The protesters blocked nearly 25km of road from Tongi to Salna, causing heavy traffic congestion on both sides of the road. Transparency International Bangladesh has found that the Mongla Port Customs House and Port Authority collects Tk 200 million ‘outside the bounds of the law’ during the import and export of goods. The Mongla Customs House collected Tk 156 million in 2016-17, while the Port Authority collected Tk 46.1 million in violation of the law, according to a survey of users done by TIB. The TIB estimates that each import vehicle has paid a tariff of Tk 4,000 while vehicles carrying duty-free products paid Tk 1,715 to pass the customs check at the port.

Bangladesh has posted the highest-ever 7.86 per cent GDP growth in 2017-18 financial year, well surpassing the estimated growth of 7.65 per cent. There are 2.3 lakh loan defaulters in the country with the amount of the classified loan soaring to Tk 1,31,666 crore in the banks and financial institutions, Finance Minister AMA Muhith told Parliament on Wednesday. ‘As per the latest data (till June 2018) of the Credit Information Bureau (CIB) of Bangladesh Bank, now the number of loan defaulters is 2,30,658 in the country and the amount of classified loan Tk 1,31,666.16 crore,’ he said.
