Israeli warplanes pounded the Gaza Strip on Wednesday after the first rocket fire from the Palestinian territory in weeks hit an Israeli city, in a blow to efforts to avert a new war. Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas disavowed the rocket fire saying they rejected "all irresponsible attempts" to undermine Egyptian efforts to broker a new long-term truce. But Israel, which holds Hamas responsible for all rocket fire from the territory regardless of who launches it, struck 20 targets in Gaza, killing one Palestinian, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

Anna Burns has become the first Northern Irish author to win the Man Booker prize, taking the £50,000 award for “Milkman”, her timely, Troubles-set novel about a young woman being sexually harassed by a powerful man. The experimental novel, Burns’ third, is narrated by an unnamed 18-year-old girl, known as “middle sister”, who is being pursued by a much older paramilitary figure, the milkman. It is “incredibly original”, according to the Booker’s chair of judges, the philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah, the Guardian reported.

Two female suspects have surrendered to law enforcers at the Nilufa Villa building in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi bringing the standoff to an end, according to police officers at the scene. The 41-hour operation came to an end on Wednesday without bloodshed. The two women, clad in black burkas, were escorted by law enforcers to a special ambulance around 2:45pm. Fourteen Iranian security forces, including members of the Revolutionary Guards, were kidnapped on the border with Pakistan on Tuesday, state news agency IRNA reported, citing an official who said the kidnappers were members of a terrorist group. A young man, believed to be a drug trader, has been found dead at the Sadar Upazila in Jashore. He died in a gunfight between drug traders, police said. A Dhaka court will announce its verdict on former prime minister Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case on Oct 29. Special Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman set the verdict date on Tuesday. The case was filed against the BNP chief by the Anti-Corruption Commission eight years ago. The ACC had filed the corruption case with Tejgaon Police Station in 2010, accusing Khaleda and three others of embezzling Tk 31.54 million from the Zia Charitable Trust. Gunfire has been heard from one of two houses in Narsingdi soon after police are all set to launch operations on the suspected hideouts for the banned militant outfit JMB in the houses. Around 12:30pm on Tuesday, newsmen gathered close to the scene and heard rounds of gunfire. The law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the two houses in Madhabdee and Shekherchar.
