A US Navy warplane crashed into the sea northeast of the Philippines on Monday, the second crash in less than a month involving aircraft from the carrier the USS Ronald Reagan. The aircraft, an F/A-18 Super Hornet, had a mechanical problem during routine operations over the Philippine Sea in the Western Pacific, the Navy’s 7th Fleet said in a statement. In October, an MH-60 Seahawk helicopter, also assigned to the Ronald Reagan, crashed shortly after takeoff, injuring a dozen sailors.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has threatened to reconsider the party’s decision to contest the upcoming general election if the government continues to arrest the BNP leaders and activists. “So far there is no proper environment for an election. They are arresting our leaders and activists. We have repeated our demands. We will reconsider our decision to contest the election if this continues,” he said after the BNP began the sale of its nomination forms at its Naya Paltan office on Monday morning.
