ESPNs Michelle Beadle has stopped watching football: The sport does not care about women
In the wake of Ohio States decision to suspend head coach Urban Meyer for just three games, much of the sports world was furious.
In a 23-page report of the investigations findings, Meyer was dishonest throughout his handling of former wide receivers coach Zach Smiths alleged abuse of his ex-wife, Courtney Smith. Meyer only made matters worse with his defiantly tone-deaf press conference.
And now, ESPNs Michelle Beadle says she has stopped watching the sport of football entirely. In Thursdays episode of Get Up, Beadle explained why shes done watching football and lambasted Meyer for lying about domestic abuse in his program.
“Number 1 — 2018 will go down for me as the year we just decided were just not gonna use the word lie anymore. And were gonna call it all kinds of other things. He lied. He didnt misrepresent the facts. He wasnt less than accurate. You lied and you can just call it lying. Why weve decided as media and a society to just kind of walk around that so very softly — youre a liar. You lied. Period. Done.
“That being said, theres a reason why this will be the second season I dont watch NFL and I dont spend my Saturdays watching college football either. I believe that the sport of football has set itself up to be in a position where it shows itself in the bigger picture to not really care about women — they dont really care about people of color, but we wont get into that for NFL either. But as a woman, I feel like a person who has been marginalized. And every single one of these stories that comes out, every single time, pushes me further and further away. I realize that they dont care, but for me, its opened up my weekends. I appreciate you for giving that to me. I dont care anymore.
“Ive lost the ability to be surprised. You got three games. You couldve been fired. They couldve gotten away with not having to pay you a single dime. You survived it, and not only did you survive it, but you didnt have the grace enough to at least look over the statement you were handed seven seconds before and pretend that you meant a single word in it. The entire thing is a disgrace. Im just numb to it. Im just ready for NBA to kick off, quite frankly. Thats what Im here for.”
