’Another weakness of BRTA is the prevalence of brokers both inside and outside the office,’ the minister said, adding, ’If there is no connection from inside then how brokers from outside come to work here?’
He alleged that these brokers were responsible for tarnishing BRTA’s reputation.
’I am not party to commissions and percentages,’ he said, ’if any media publishes report on corruption in BRTA, then as a minister I cannot avoid my responsibility.’
The minister was unequivocal, he asked the officials concerned to rectify themselves.
In cases of corruption and irregularities which resulted from keeping connections with the brokers, actions would be taken against the authority officials as per the laws and regulations showing zero tolerance, he said.
Admitting that the service seekers were still facing harassment in BRTA offices, the minister said that he want a corruption-free BRTA.
He observed that in the past the fitness certificates were available even without taking vehicles to the BRTA circle offices which is a clear breach of the laws.
The minister asked the authorities to expedite the process of distribution of retro reflective number plates, take action against dented and unfit vehicles running inside the capital and find a place for setting up a dumping station.
BRTA chairman Md Moshiar Rahman said that currently unfit vehicles and drivers without licences, especially driving licences for heavy vehicles, constitute a major problem for them.
Lack of dumping stations compelled them to take action against the unfit vehicles, he added.
The meeting was attended, among others, by the senior officials of the authority.
