An important bridge without approach roads in Nagarpur upazila is creating problems for the residents of 15 villages under this upazila. The locals demand immediate construction of approach roads on the two sides of the bridge.
Residents of the area said they had long been demanding for a metalled road from Valkutia to Nagarpur Sadar as well as a pucca bridge on the Noyai River for establishing easy communication. The local government and engineering department constructed a 76.6- metre-long bridge on the river at a cost of Tk 3 crore. Das Traders got the work order in 2016.
The construction works of the bridge were completed in 2017. But the contractor did not fill 200 metres on each side of the bridge and so the bridge lacks any approach road. There is no alternative road to cross the river.
Thousands of people of Alokdia, Andhibari, Panan, Paishana, villages under Sadar union and Kodalia, Singhdair, Kahguria, Vhadra villages under Bhadra union are the worst sufferers in the absence of any approach road. Chandana Akhter, a resident of Bhadra union, said they could not use the bridge.
Alam Sikder, a resident of Alokdia village, said that the negligence of the contractors, in cahoots with some government officials, was hampering the achievements of the present gvernment.
Md Alam Hosssain, member of Nagarpur union parishad, said the bridge could not be used for lack of approach roads.
Upazila Engineer of Nagarpur, Md Shahenur Alam, said the contractor could not finish the works due to certain legal matters. "We shall invite a fresh tender for earth-filling. We’ve already sent a proposal to the authorities for constructing the approach roads," he added.
