National flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited incurred a loss about Tk 200 crore in 2017-2018 fiscal year.‘The Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited earned some Tk 4931.64 crore while it spent some Tk 5133.11 crore, resulting in a loss of Tk 201.47 crore in 2017-2018 fiscal,’ state minister for civil aviation and tourism Mahbub Ali told parliament while responding to a question of Gazi Mohammad Shahnewaz from Habigabnj 1.

Presenting a list of Biman’s revenue, the minister said the national flag carrier made profit in the last three fiscal years.

He said the earned Tk 4,551.52 crore while spent Tk 4,504.77 crore in 2016-2017.

’The Biman Bangladesh Airlines earned Tk 46.76 crore in that year,’ he said.

The national flag carrier also made profit Tk 4,965.53 crore against its expenditure of Tk 4,730.03 crore in 2015-2016 fiscal. It gained about Tk 235.50 crore in that fiscal.

The Biman made the highest profit Tk 275.99 crore in 2014-2015 fiscal. It earned Tk 4,694.80 crore against its expenditure of Tk 4,418.81 crore.

The state minister said new routes have been ear-marked to make the Biman Bangladesh Limited a profitable one.

’As new destinations, the national flag carrier will fly to Guangzhou, Madinah, Colombo and Male in future,’ he said, adding that plans had also been taken to increase the frequency of the profitable routes.

Responding to another question of Abdul Latif, the minister said a G-to-G agreement was signed on August 1 in 2018 with Canada to add three Dash-8 Q 400 aircrafts in Biman fleet.

As per the agreement, the first aircraft will be collected in March, second one in May and the last one in June in 2020, he said.

The three aircrafts will be operated in seven domestic routes — Chattogram, Sylhet, Jashore, Rajshahi, Syedpur, Cox’s Bazar and Barishal — and two regional routes— Yangon and Kolkata, he added.
